What better way to show your ignorance. The price gap between the Jap. literbikes and the Duc superbike is narrower than ever, and the Duc should finally perform at parity (if not better than) them w/ a significant extra "cool" factor/sound the Jap bikes can't touch. 381 lbs./160 hp was unimaginable in a Duc until now - supposedly the base model outperforms the old 999R.

base model is $14,995, barely $3K over the '07 R1. Ducati actually pointed out that they've strived to bring more value to their price structure w/ this model!
I'm not sure which will be faster, it s/b close. Duc has over 90 lb. ft. of tq.!

I think a lot of people will be surprised by this bike.

chris if I offended you I apologize, but sorry buddy not too much ignorance here, Ive been around bikes (on/off road) for pretty much all my life even though I am still young (25) it does help that my uncle owns a suzuki dealership. Too what you stated about the ducati being priced close to the R1 price 3k is still 3k. Dont get me wrong I rode my share of Ducs and they are fantastic bikes but I cant see spending the extra money for a bike that probably wont out perform "Jap bikes". But I dont pay full price either so that has a big effect on it too. And the repairs for that bike is just a little more than say a R1 or GSXR. But either way ride safe and have fun.

NP, it all depends on your budget. To me that Duc is like the Ferrari of motorcycles, a sexy exotic for a modest premium. $3K isn't going to kill me, and having never crashed on the street, repair costs aren't much of a factor.
Of course, I love the GSXR750 as well, and could easily be steered in that direction, esp. for a "family" deal!

3k cheaper, performs better, R1 ftw, same as always (in regards to the Duc, not a Gix). I log too many miles to ride a Duc... I couldn't even take my yearly week long trip with my old man if there wasn't a Ducati dealership along the way to provide regular maintenance.
I will agree the gap is closing, but it still has ALL of the inherent ducati disadvantages, price, power, reliability, parts cost, vtwin... and it's outgrown any class it may have been competitive in in regards to racing as well.

I'd spend the extra $3K w/o hesitation.

Racing class matters only if you're planning to race it, otherwise that's an academic point. Still, WSB is expected to raise the limit, and I'd expect the AMA to follow suit.
The R1 is a great technological bargain, but IMO it's kind of ugly and doesn't have a Duc's character. Ironic, b/c I LOVE the R6's looks!
