Default 2008 STI FULL TEST

It seems CarandDriver sucks at launching this car... 5.1seconds to 60!!! Quartermile in 13.6@102mph WTF? 16mpg??? yiikes.

RoadandTrack did get some sweeet times.

C&D noted:

"To get repeatable launches you have to catch the engine on the rev upswing near 6000rpms or it bogs. Only one in three is decent. That smell is the clutch dying"

Thats gonna be a real world time because no one in their right mind is gonna launch their brand new STI at 6000 rpm at every stoplight.

I thought that the new STI weighed marginally less than the outgoing model, correct me if im wrong. Is it typical of boxer engines to get such low gas mileage, how does the regular impreza compare in terms of efficiency?

It's a car magazine and a sports car - they're going to get horrible mileage while everyone tests it! Everyone that drove it was flogging it every chance they had. I'm pretty sure you can get a lot better fuel mileage if you're not driving it hard all day, every day.

Back when CarandDriver did a comparison between the Evo IX MR and STI, the STI ran a 12.9 stock.

I will bet you the purchase of a new STI that the car won't get 16 MPG with sane driving. It's the same engine made nicer. Definitely not a decrease of ~6 MPG. You're looking at 20+, at the least. 17/23 reported.

It weighs more than the older one. It is the WRX that weighs 50 lbs less than the previous version.

2008 STI: 3395 lbs
2007 STI: 3351 lbs

Of course launching an AWD turbo car is difficult. It's nothing like a RWD N/A car.
