^+1. The Z32's are a PITA to launch as well... and both cars are good for nothing without being able to launch (which isn't the case for the VR-4 - I constantly pulled 1.7 60's) considering all the other much better options if you want something that actually handles.

 

I had a 93 SL for about 2 years and it was a nice car for what it was. The interior was always my favorite part of the car, comfy and driver oriented. It's a nice cruising car but not much fun when driven aggressively, I had full intake and exhaust mods on mine and it actually pulled pretty well considering the weight and what not. Transmissions are the weak point, at least on the NA models. All and all if you can find a nice clean one, and are prepared with roughy $1500 to swap the trans if need be then I don't think your friend will be making out too bad. You almost have to look at it as buying a shell when it has that many miles because it's kind of a crap shoot as to how the car will hold up mechanically.

3kgt is overpriced for what it is. It's a pretty good first car, I'm OK with the looks, but for a real sports car, don't go there

 

I am giving them a , my brother had one and got into a nasty head on accident, That car took a hell of a hit and kept him alive. He walked away with a fat lip from airbag deployment, thats it.

This is the non turbo model. Sorry, should have clarified that.
Not sure why my friend is buying this even though he loved driving the Miata.
He was looking at 300zxs but all the decent ones were out of his budget.

I dont think he wants a turbo anything on a car thats so old.
This is supposed to be a beater/fun stick car. He has a nice 3-series for car needs.

 

Ok, yes the car is heavy. Yes the car is a pain in the ass to work on. Is it a true sportscar? Yes.
The 300zx and Supra both weigh north of 3500lbs, the 3sis weigh a couple hundred more but come with awd to handle the weight, and yes it does make a difference.
The 6g63 engines are very stout with no known weaknesses, very well engineered but the rear bank's spark plugs are a PITA to get to.
The Z32 is also a huge PITA to work on, so pick your poison, but I've heard from people who have owned both the 3si in the long run is a bit easier, so go figure.
The 3si is not overpriced, you get a v6 tt with awd for under 10 grand all day long for good examples, the supra is overpriced. Still a great value and now they're holding their value rather well.
I'm surprised though that no one mentioned its fatal flaw- the transmission. It's not a question of if, it's when, and it will break if you're having fun with the car, namely the transfer case. In the 94+, it's better, I believe Kormex was the supplier if memory serves me right, but even those will break over time. Why? 300+lbs of torque stock plus 3700 curb weight with a knuckle head doing awd launches, do the math.
Buddy of mine has a stealth tt, great car, I had fun driving it, gobs of power, cheap to modify since it doesn't have the zomg fast and furious hype behind it, and it handles rather well; awd makes up for talent real fast. I'm sure if you took some 3si guys to your local backroad in your S, I'm sure they won't have a hardtime keeping up.
