No other car makers seem to have trouble pleasing the sports car fan base - they're all still making at least one sports car. No matter how you try to justify it, Honda just abandoned its fan base. As for Nissan, I don't think a $40k 370Z is going to sell as well as the old 350Z - for $40k you're basically in Corvette/Boxster territory.
I just happen to visited a nissan dealer last weekend, the are selling the nismo z for 40k, the cheapest z in the lot was a hair over 30(sans vlsd and bigger binder)
imho, it a good marketing mix right there, you don't see as much 370z on the road(compare to the launch of 350z) because the market segment is getting smaller and the economy is just not helping.

I like the look, price is high but its not that much higher than the 350 vert.
And yes, that leaves a void in the low 30k price range.

Great looking car, much better than the 350 'vert, and better than the 370z too. Taking the roof off really reveals that voluptuous shoulder line, and dayum it's very sexy!
Price doesn't seem as high as it's being made out to be, esp. the car in the photos is very well appointed. I do agree someone should step up and fill that hole in the $30k roadster market, but on a performance/features basis, I think this car compares very favorably with what BMW/Benz have to offer for another $10k.
It's just not a raw, no-frills sportscar at a bargain price, but they clearly never intended it to be one, this is obviously pointed upmarket.

Anyhoo,
The 370Zs are selling at invoice. This will not sell at msrp. So technically, this IS the 30K segment.
