Which is great if you want a two ton whale. I'll give BMW that it does make the best handling two ton whales out there, but unless you want a two ton whale that doesn't mean a whole lot. Each generation of BMW gets bigger, bloatier, and to me less appealing.

The 1 series was a move in the right direction, but lack of a LSD and the perpetual look of fear it gives off coupled with a 135i Coupe weighing only about 90 pounds less than the 335i sedan leaves me wonder what the point was.

You crack me up Dombey. I think your forgetting that the current 5 series body style wont get that TTV8 with 405hp 450lb or torque. If you dont like the direction BMW is taking with the car style-wise then you'll be getting worked up over nothing. I must admit though, I would drive anything with that motor in it. Just as I'd almost drive anything with the N54 in it!!!

Also, I'm guessing you've never driven an //M car before. Both cars will have an entirely different feel. I cant imagine that TT V8 making your blood boil as much as ripping 8400rpm shifts in that M3's V8. A 335i is just as fast as an E46 M3 but its surely not as fun.
Actually, I don't really like the current 5 series body style so I'm sorta counting on it looking better in the next gen.

I have driven a Z4M Coupe, but I don't imagine that to be anything like the M3 or any other BMW, for that matter.

I also realize there will be a significant difference in the feel - redlines, suspensions, turbo vs N/A, etc - but to be honest - as much as I love redlining my s2k I could live w/o the lofty redline.

I would be interested to hear what the thought about a used-M5 v a new M3 both low-$60s?

I know the M5 500hp etc.. and a touch more upscale and more roomie.

It's not entirely fair to question used v new since the price value will favor the used so much and some people prefer buying one or the other.

I still prefer the M3 absent a need for a spacious rear seat. But I also prefer a smaller sporty car. If I really wanted big and comfortable sedan then I would probably skip over the M5s in favor of a S8 or such bigger/heavier more isolated etc..

[QUOTE=Onehots2k,Feb 8 2008, 12:22 PM] The previous gen M5 is obsolete. STILL amazing but obsolete. The current gen M5 and 550i will have a feel entirely different to the former. They wont ever feel like an s2k but stop raggin on them until you've driven them. I'm glad your not ''into 2 tons.''

Obsolete? Further evidence that you work for BMW marketing, only wanting to push what they currently sell.

A friend has a new gen M5, which replaced an old gen M5. He still misses the old one at times (perhaps b/c the new one has been a shop magnet - it blew an engine, a tech @ the dealership crashed it, and he locked up 2nd gear). Both are very impressive cars - I prefer the new one, but I'd be very happy w/ an old gen as well.
ok, so this is probably the fifth time I've heard of someone blowing an M5 engine. What scares me is that the M3 engine is essentially the same, minus 2 cylinders...something to think about.

It may be faster in a straight line but it's going to take more than a suspension package to make it feel like an M3.

There's more than just springs-shocks-wheels that goes into an M3.

I have a friend who blew an E46 M3 engine, and another who sold her M3 at 99,xxx miles b/c she couldn't afford to keep it after the 100K mile extended warranty expired.

BMW's are great cars to lease under warranty.

I keep hearing this and then that you can't get an extended warranty on the M cars

How does Porsche stand as far as reliability? 911s any better or worse than Caymans?
