Default 996 Porsche Turbo - Anyone Own or Owned?

Anyone here currently have a 996 era Turbo? Curious on the ownership experience over a few years. I had a Turbo S purely to export, so I did not drive it... It's a car creeping onto my short list for next car. Seems to be a deal IMO for what you get.

It is an absolute steal of a performance car for what price you can buy them now. Hell, they're cheaper than 993 Carrera 2's! A buddy of mine here in Raleigh had one with some mild performance mods that gave him over 500hp. He only owned it for about 1 1/2 years but it wasn't b/c of reliability - which was fine. He just goes through lots of cars, always thinking about the next.

I found a 2002 GT2 (very rare) for about $50K (in Canada) recently and was very tempted! Bulletproof engine, strong transmission and fairly reliable overall, though some of your rubber/hoses may be getting old at this point.

An s2ki member in S Florida bought one last year, but he's long moved on from the forum. I know a few people through PCA with 997 turbos, but I haven't met anyone with a 996. The good news is the engine doesn't suffer from any of the common concerns of the non-turbos of this era. And the turbo is quite a bit better looking than the plain Carrera (which is the most un-loved of all 911 generations). Awd and 0-100 in under 10 seconds is nothing to sneeze at. And a great value at today's prices.

You are all hitting the points that are attracting me to the 911 turbo; lack of engine issues the NA 996's have.

What prices are you seeing? I am seeing mid to low 40s. That seems a bit for a 10-13 year old Porsche. Personally I would spring for a 997.2 S instead for not too much more. Much better looking, nicer inside, newer, lighter (2wd), better on gas and only slightly down on power, still available in AWD if desired although you probably give up the weight advantage.

Valid points, but don't forget that the 996 TT cost well over $100k when it was new. It's also the cheapest 911 Turbo you can buy. A 997.2 S may only be slightly down on power but for less than $1k you can boost the 996TT's power north of 500. Personally I'd rather still have a 993 TT but their prices aren't dipping any time soon (probably ever).

A Turbo 911, is a Turbo 911... 997 S is not a Turbo... The Turbo's I was looking at were up to 50K. 997 does have some advantages, but my initial thinking was purely based on the strength of that engine. Is the 997.2 going to hold up as well?

Hard to say, all I know is that they supposedly do not suffer from RMS or IMS issues. 996 Turbo is a turbo that's true, but a 996 turbo is also a 996. I agree that the turbo engine is probably the better engine but a car that is 8-10 years older is likely going to have more issues in general. Ask yourself "why are the 996 turbos going for such reasonable sums?" before you make your decision. Spend some time on rennlist, those guys are very down to earth and happy to tell you why one porsche is better than another

Ill just leave these pictures of interiors here:

Frankly, the older interior looks fine to me. I'd love to own one if I had the means.
