out of those a4 is the best on gas and cheaper to maintain but it is the smallest and weakest car.

Yeah, I wouldn't get a high mileage AMG...I am in your boat and thought about doing the same, but it's just too risky, unless you are good friends with a Mercedes mechanic. I'm sure the parts and maintenance would be very high, and the gas mileage on AMGs is soo bad. The A4 might be decent (although your price seems high, seems like you could get a decent 08 for $25K). They respond well to modifications, with a few boltons and a tune you can probably make 50-80 hp and tq. APR (goapr.com) and Stasis (stasisengineering.com) sell parts. Or, if you leave it stock you are getting very good gas mileage. The APR lets you switch between tunes so you can go to stock tune when you want the mileage or switch to the more aggressive tune if you want to have fun.
