anyone own a viper?
xviper: do you still talk to a viper owners? what kind of insurance would i be looking at paying at the age of 25?
Also, you said you didn't drive it in the winter...did you store it on blocks? What sort of storage things did you do to it? gas stabalizer..stuff like that. It is hard to find good reliable info on the viper. Are there any major differences in vipers from 1997-2000? mechanically? Do you know anything about the extended warranty that dodge offered? Can you buy that warranty from dodge on a used viper? Thanks for your help.

xviper, great write up!
After I did it myself I started hearing and reading many reports of people missing the 2nd/3rd shift and hitting 1st. Keep this in mind when you test drive or buy a Viper. It's no big deal and after driving the S2000 with it's tight shifter it should be no problem for you. Awesome cars and I've almost put one in my garage several times. I probably will someday but I have a car now that's at least as fast and handles better -- I just can't drive it on the street.

The one time I personally missed a shift was in a 94 like yours. It was cool day with temps in the low to mid 40's and the cars owner kept egging me on to get on it or to push the car. I finally lost my will power and eased into it leaving a light on a big open road with only one car in sight ahead and we knew the driver of that car. I ran 1st just about to the redline and eased into 2nd because I knew it would get loose if I hit it too hard. I figured I was safe to nail a 2nd to 3rd shift at the redline, (what is that, 85 or 90 mph?), and I missed and caught 1st just as I was passing our friends. All at once I saw the tach needle point straight down and the back of the car literally hopped a couple of inches in the air according to our friends as it went to the right about 50 degrees. I think I was back on the clutch before the tires were back on the pavement and found the slide very easy to catch. No damage was done except to my pride and I was highly embarrassed. The car owners response was,
The Viper is a great car. A friend/client of mine has one. Xviper is right though. You can't park it anywhere without a crowd. You almost get sick of the questions and everywhere you go people yell at you.
The car is raw. After 30 minutes of cruising in that thing my ass hurt and I was ready to climb back into our Accord.
Don't get me wrong though. If I had a few cars and much more dough, I'd only bring it out a few times a week for a 30 minute to 1 hour romp around the city. To me that's all it is good for.
