I wouldn't drive one w/o a helmet and for 50k it better be wet weather capable. If someone could produce something similar for 30k I'd be all over it. A big go-cart of sorts.
I intially thought it was closer to 30k. After a bit of research I realized that the first Atom was 35k for the 140hp engine.

140hp is plenty for 1000lbs car!

You're exactly right but you cannot find anything around that price now. If they gave me a 160 k20(just to be current) i'd be happy. I would source my own motor and even assemble it myself if it saved me substantially.

Well they did offer a roller without motor for $40k I think (unsure if offer still there).

I instructed someone in one a while back with the Atom 2 (Ecotec 300 hp variant). It was silly fast in a straight line but the handling was loose. Breath on the gas coming out of a corner and you better be ready to counter steer quickly. As far as the steering feel/feedback the Elise seemed as good or better.

There were a few floating around (245 hp Ecotec s/c) for around 40K, the Atom 3 with the K20 starts at 50 but is really around 55-60 after basic options. If I could afford it as a 3rd car I would love to have one but it's impractical to the point that it makes the Elise seem like an everyday Camry DD.

I wouldn't think Ariel ever intended the car to be offered to those needing financing.

They will let you pay it in installments. 25% down, 50% when it's halfway built, and final 25% when car is ready to pickup. You'll have about 9 months

Financing toys like this is not for the financially astute. If you can't pay cash, you shouldn't be driving one IMO.

Slightly off-topic, but why isn't the KTM X-bow available in the U.S?
I LOVE the shape/look of that car, and think that it'll handle just as good as the Atom.
