I wouldn't drive one w/o a helmet and for 50k it better be wet weather capable. If someone could produce something similar for 30k I'd be all over it. A big go-cart of sorts.
140hp is plenty for 1000lbs car!

I intially thought it was closer to 30k. After a bit of research I realized that the first Atom was 35k for the 140hp engine.

You're exactly right but you cannot find anything around that price now. If they gave me a 160 k20(just to be current) i'd be happy. I would source my own motor and even assemble it myself if it saved me substantially.
I instructed someone in one a while back with the Atom 2 (Ecotec 300 hp variant). It was silly fast in a straight line but the handling was loose. Breath on the gas coming out of a corner and you better be ready to counter steer quickly. As far as the steering feel/feedback the Elise seemed as good or better.
There were a few floating around (245 hp Ecotec s/c) for around 40K, the Atom 3 with the K20 starts at 50 but is really around 55-60 after basic options. If I could afford it as a 3rd car I would love to have one but it's impractical to the point that it makes the Elise seem like an everyday Camry DD.

I wouldn't think Ariel ever intended the car to be offered to those needing financing.
