So far, the Ecotecs have proven to be quite reliable even when coupled with some decent boost levels. It's not like things fall apart just because they're domestic made.

but would you rather have an american engine or a honda engine?
I would like to have the best engine. American or Honda is beside the point.

are they no longer using the honda engine for north america?
Everywhere in the world EXCEPT North America will get a Honda K20 motor derived from the Civic Type-R. Brammo Motorsports is the exclusive distributor/manufacturer for all American Ariel Atoms. Brammo could not secure a deal with American Honda for the 245-hp K20 motors. GM happily stepped in to offer their Ecotec motors derived from the Chevy Cobalt.

For a limited time about 6-8 months ago, Brammo Motorsports offered the Honda option. Basically, they purchased ~10 Honda K20 motors from Spoon Sports in Japan (not sure if they went through Opak Racing). This option was about $5000-8000 more expensive than a comparable 245-hp Ecotec motor option. I was just about to place an order for the Spoon motor, but they had just sold the last engine

I think there's about 12-15 Atoms in the US with the Honda motor. The first one imported as a test mule, and the rest imported via grey market.

I may still get one with the GM motor, but will hold off for now. The biggest hurdle with ownership is finding insurance for the Atom.

Is there any way to order an Atom sans drivetrain? If you really wanted the Honda engine you could always import one on your own.

Oh, whatever, man. What the hell do you mean reliability? Do you even know anything about domestic engines or are you just spouting your inane ignorance?

I'd get it with only the Honda engine.

Brammo motorsports will only sell complete cars. They will not sell rollers (I've tried )

Importing one through grey market or buying one used is your best bet. A few months ago, the first imported Atom in North America with the Civic Type-R motor was put on sale for a cheap $70,000
