I'm not in love with the looks of either one. The ATS lights climb too far up the fender. Sure, I would rather give GM money vs BMW but I suspect the BMW's resale will be stronger even if the ATS is 100% as good or even better. It will take at least a decade of a top to bottom lineup for Caddy to regain it's standing (thus resale).

On paper, ignoring my resale expectations I would have to drive the stick shift versions of both to decide.

I have always had a likeness for Cadillac. For part availability and pricing, I'd go with the ATS. I do appreciate the German cars, but the gremlins are always on my mind when taking a look at them.

I'm about 20 years too young to buy a Cadillac. They have gotten better lately, but their name has been so badly soiled it will take a while to recover. They are still too much of an old foagie car for me to consider one.

Gotta say I'd probably stick with BMW. I like the looks of the Caddy and the price should be lower but I believe you'll lose that price edge on resale. Performance is still going to favor the BMW, I think, no matter which iteration you choose (BMW has an 8-spd auto with their cars, I believe, which will make them quicker in most situations).

I would chooose:

BMW if it's the 335i.

but ATS turbo 4 over the BMW 328i.

Not that the Caddy turbo 4 is necessarily better than the BMW turbo 4, but I wouldn't be as excited to own a 328i, the least expensive BMW that everyone else buys just to have a BMW.

I think I'd prefer the 3-Series. But that's because I'm not a fan of Cadillac or GM, although I respect and would consider buying a CTS-V after sitting in one in the showroom. Everyone who had Cadillacs around here and around my age (20) were super cocky about having a Cadillac, and I'm talking the older ones, 05ish. People who buy 328's and such are usually middle aged women who just want something that has a BMW/Merc/Audi badge at their banking job.

But I'd much prefer this:

I think its a tough call - on the Cadillac, the mechanical bits will break, on the BMW, the electronic bits will break.

And I have to admit, I didn't think much of the ATS until I saw it in person.
