here's a link:

http://www.ukintpress.com/engineofth...egories04.html

here's a breakdown of the results, engine of the year:

2004: Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive (Prius)
2003: Mazda RENESIS Rotary (RX-8)
2002: BMW 4.4L V8 Valvetronic (745Li, 545i, 645Ci)
2001: BMW 3.2L I6 (M3)
2000: Honda Hybrid 1-Litre (Insight)
1999: Toyota Yaris 1-Litre

Both the S2000 2.0L and the M3's 3.2L have held best engine in their respective displacement class since the engines were introduced.

I can't believe you mentioned MB's and Jaguars I-6 and not BMW's...the other two can't touch BMW's I-6, it's the motor that catapulted them to where they are now which is the measuring stick in the sport sedan segment.
Note that I stated that the list was just my personal favorites. I don't have anything against the BMW I-6, but it just isn't one of my favorite motors. The Jag motors have "English *style*," and I like both the look and the sound enough to tolerate the leaks and other chronic Jaguar characteristics. The Benz motors have awed me with their refinement and durability. When it comes to the BMW cars I like the sound and power delivery of their V-8 over the I-6. I don't mean to take anything away from the BMW I-6. It's just not on my personal favorites list.

Hmm... Interesting.

Best engines in the world gotta be V12. Lamborghini started as a tractor manufacturer, so the high horsepower engines was a must. They're definitely one of the best.

Although it's actually a 5.7 liter. 605hp, 435lb-ft, 8400rpm. The best sounding exhaust I've ever heard in my life.

The problem with those awards is they are displacement based. Thus a heavy small displacement motor with high specific power (say VW 1.8T) does better than a larger displacement but lighter motor (say Honda's 2.4L I4). Even if the Honda motor has the same power and better economy. In this case I'm thinking of the engine in my Dad's '98 Passat vs the motor in my Mom's '99 Honda Accord.

The displacement based rule means GM will never get credit for producing a 400hp 5.7L V8 that gets mileage equal to our cars.
Then again this gets back into the power/liter argument.

I don't understand what you mean. The engines are broken out by their displacement - so the VW 1.8 is in an entirely different category than the Honda 2.4. The actual scores are determined by judges, not some sort of power to weight calculation or the like.

There is no "displacement based rule." In the 4.0 liter and above category, the contestants were:

Volkswagen Diesel 5-litre (Touareg/Phaeton) 199
BMW 4.4-litre Valvetronic (545i, X5, 645i, 745i) 129
Mercedes-AMG 6-litre (S65, CL65) 111
Ferrari 5.7-litre (612) 94
Aston Martin 5.9-litre (DB9, Vanquish) 91
Chrysler/Dodge 5.7-litre (300C/Magnum) 88
