I had a 944 turbo - that was a great engine.

Those were smooth, strong engines.

Ford Argentina (and other South American countries, I'm sure) offer the F-100 pickup with a 3.9L turbo diesel I4 motor with 203 hp and 406 ft-lbs of torque!

Jeez, each cylinder must've been the size of a thimble, lol.
Or, as I like to say, about the size of my thumb...

Another small engine I really liked was my 350cc I4 in my 1973 Honda CB350/4, that sucker had a 13,000 redline, and I'm sure those pistons were the size of my thumb.

from wikipedia link above...

"In the early 20th century, bigger engines existed, both in road cars and sports cars. Due to the absence of displacement limit regulations, manufacturers took increasing liberties with engine size. In order to achieve power over 100 horsepower (75 kW), most engine builders simply increased displacement, which could sometimes achieve over 10.0 L. One of the biggest straight-4s of its time was De Dietrich 17,000 cc motor. "
