I admit, I am a Jerk at times and I have an old E36M3 now. My first BMW. It just called my name. Can't help it that I have less tollerance for stupidity than the average person. Partly derived from my middle class childhood, Engineering background and my vast knowledge of mechanical things but I am generally nice at stop walks (ref article). If there's a never ending stream of people, obviously you have to shove your way through eventually.

hmm.. . is there a correlation b/t people that have good, high stress jobs being jerks?
more than likey

I've never driven a BMW, although I love them... but I think you hit the nail on the head for me. I'd probably be classified as a "jerk" even though I don't mean to be, it's just amazing to me the amount of ignorance on the road today. People on their phones not paying attention, don't follow the speed limit (the only road you can take to get to my place is 55mph... a country road. I'm not exaggerating at all when I say almost EVERYONE drives it at 40mph. Then I'm labeled the "jerk" because I use the dotted yellow to go around them with them honking or flashing their brights. It's not my fault you can't do the posted speed limit!), and just general ignorant behavior make me out to be the perceived jerk. I hate to say it but when I'm nice or just go along with the ignorance, it always screws me over somehow... if I drive like the jerk, it always works out better.

I also think BMW's are engineered to be more fun to drive and engaging than your average car which is probably also why those owners are labeled as jerks. They're out on the road enjoying the car they purchased with quicker acceleration and handling than the person in the minivan who thinks they're driving a jerk... no, it's just easy and fun in a car like a BMW. A lot of times it's not the person looking to be a jerk, the car makes them that way (one example of this with people on this forum I suspect would be cornering... the S handles beautifully and when the person in front of you can't take a corner at the same speed, you may end up closely behind them and the reality is the car makes it easy for you to drive that way and to everyone else you're a jerk).

Ok, I am picking one up soon, but I can not remember ANY instance in my lifetime where I watched someone in a Bimmer driving like a douchebag. That is not to say I would not have found them to be douchebags if I got to know them, but I had not witnessed it. I went to a BMW Ultimate drive event that had lots of people bragging to each other what car they were ordering and how much it was going to cost so I was rolling my eyes a bunch. Not sure if I would choose hanging out with them over say, jabbing a knife into my skull.

Most of the Bimmer drivers I encounter are women driving a 3 series calmly in the right lane.

When mine comes in, I will drive as I always do, which does NOT include cheating at four way stops or ignoring stop signs, lane weaving or tailgating. It may periodically include giving someone the bird if I find them to be driving like A-holes though. And I can't talk on my cell because I don't own one.

If you check out the bimmer boards and somebody makes a criticism of a 3 series, a few insecure folks jump in to pummel the offender. But at least in my experience Bimmer drivers are fine on the road, it is when they get out of the car that I am most likely to not care for them.

The BMW stereotype holds true (all stereotypes are grounded in some reality, despite people trying to deny it). This probably applies to Audi as well. It's simply the "I'm better than you" attitude that many owners have. Look at a car changing lanes w/o using a turn signal and guess what car it's going to be.. I'd say 60% BMW/Audi, 30% some kind of "luxury" SUV, and 10% misc other cars. The stereotypical BMW owner often times doesn't use their turn signals because they're too cool or are busy yapping on their phone/etc.

Sure there are plenty of non-stereotypical BMW drivers, but the stereotype is a stereotype for a reason. Most BMW owners I know acknowledge it. I don't consider paying attention and perhaps driving slightly aggressively driving like a "jerk," but not using turn signals/cutting people off I most certainly do.
