Why would you put a BOV on a turbo system that doesn't need one? For the sound? No offense, but that's stupid.

If you intend on overboosting, you'll need a BOV, but that's a different story.

The "engine cover" has nothing to do with the engine. It's just a cover.

And yes, you can put an FMIC on any turbo setup. There's no real distinction between "stock" and "aftermarket" turbos.

but i think he doesn't wanna spend over $300 just for sound ,,,,

how about FMIC with BOV ???
that's cool enough right??

thanks again

do either of you know?

a BOV has nothing to do with overboosting or controlling boost. That is the job of the wastegate which is on the exhaust side of the equation.

The BOV is on the intake side and prevent compressor surge from damaging the turbo or throttle body flap. The BOV does not give you any horsepower but can increase the life of the components mentioned above.

Most people get it for the sound. It is not rice or stupid. I love the sound. Most people love the sound too. Most factory turbo cars already have stock BOVs that vent to a pipe that routes the air back into the intake before the turbo, thus you don't really hear it. Aftermarket BOVs usually vent to atmosphere (which is technically illegal).

If you have an AFM/MAFS based engine management system, like the stock MR2 turbo is, you will LOSE horsepower immediately following the venting of the BOV as this will cause your car to run temporarily rich since the ECU thinks you have more air than you actually do and puts in too much fuel. It may also cause backfire and sometimes flames to shoot out (which is also kinda cool )

My friend has a 96-01 A4 1.8T w/ an HKS SS BOV so I'm sure it can be done. As for the front mount intercooler - you can add one to any turbo but i am not sure if there is a kit. Also, you might generate more lag due to volume of piping and intercooler you will be adding between the compressor and the manifold. Some times the stock turbo is too small for a front mount, especially the BIG front mounts that everyone likes. The main advantage of the IC is that you can run higher boost safely which = more power but at a certain point your turbo will be too small and not be efficient at creating high flow thus you will just make more heat than power. Another thing to consider is that you can probably increase boost safely a few psi without needing an aftermarket intercooler (ask the Audi guys as I am not familiar with that motor).

Hope that helps.

Uh, yeah sang... I have no idea what a BOV is... riiiight. I'll leave it to the big boys to explain it to you.

There seriously is no reason to install a BOV on a stock vehicle unless, I guess, you like losing horespower and hearing the sound.

And miniboost, a BOV certainly does have a lot to do with overboosting -- a BOV is often a part of any high-boost aftermarket turbo kit, to help avoid abusing the butterfly and intake. Therefore, if you're running an MBC and boosting well above the factory design point, it's a very good idea to include a BOV.

You shouldn't be able to put a BOV on it because the MAF sensor on the 1.8T will record a different amount of air going into the motor and set off a check engine light. Minboost explained this earlier.

A BOV will not add any HP or lose any HP. Also, adding a BOV has nothing to do with overboosting...I don't know where you got that idea.

As minboost has said, overboosting is left up to the wastegate.
