Personally, the GT3 and 911 TT are the only 9x6 series Porsches I'd consider owning. IMO, it was a dark period in Porsche history, and they had some teething issues in the transition to water-cooled flat 6 engines. Not to mention that their headlight styling left a lot to be desired.

The non-GT3/TT motors are junk in the 996 iteriations.

I'm still trying to figure out whether the new 3.8L motor in the 2010 GT3/TT is as "good" as the previous race-proven 3.6L motor in the pre-2010 GT3/TT cars.

The 2010 GT3 got a bump in displacement, but still uses the GT1-based motor. The GT3 did not make the switch to the newer direct injection motor. It will be interesting to see if the forthcoming GT2 switches to the new DFI TT motor.

Actually the '10 GT3 and the '10 Turbo have different motors. The GT3 uses a derived version of the GT1 block that was in the previous GT3/TT. The new Turbo has the new A91 motor that's also used in the Carreras, which time will tell how reliable it's going to be.

I've heard that 987 Boxsters don't suffer the problems that the 986s did for engine failures, but then again I haven't read anything conclusive either way. Supposedly the new DFI motors in the Boxster S and Cayman S are even better, but it's too early to really say for sure.

This really depends on what gen boxter your talking about anything 04 and earlier were certainly known for the RMS issue. I have not heard much in regards to this with the 987.

[QUOTE=ZDan,Feb 15 2010, 02:05 PM] RMS and IMS issues are about the only thing keeping me from buying a used 996.

FOR THOSE WHO ALWAYS MENTION THE $200.00 OIL CHANGES.

ITS 10 QUARTS AT 20K MILES. SO TECHINICALLY IT IS THE SAME AS DOING $25.00 3K ENGINE OIL CHANGES. OR SOME WHERE IN THE BALL PARK.

PLUS OF COURSE ITS CHEAPER IF YOU GET IT DONE AT A NON PORSCHE DEALERSHIP.
