C4 Corvette: anyone had one?
#11
As QUIKAG says, the C4 was described as 10000 parts flying together in close formation.
I understand the interest in the car. I just don't understand the desire to drive or own one.

The C4 was an interesting car in that it had lots of interesting technology and design characteristics. That said, I always got the feeling it was a car that was less than the sum of its parts. ZR-1 aside, I don't really have any interest in ever owning one. I would look at the C5 first.
Of course mine is the point of view of someone who has little experience with C4s so take it with a spoon full of salt.

It's still a cool car and someday (if I ever get rich), I'd like a Vette from each generation just because they are still unique and fun cars.
If you do get a C4, get as late a model as you can (95 or 96 model) preferably the LT4 because it's definitely a hotter motor than the LT1.

The LT4 would definitely respond better to [i]bolt on[i] mods relative to the LT1. Think stock LT4= stock LS1 if you will motor to motor, disregarding the entire vehicle package.
full bolt ons + custom daily driver cam could net you 360rwhp easy

I like the feeling of getting in past that high sill, settling into the seat and the low position, and having this huge cockpit around you.

From what I understand, the platform has all the rigidity of overcooked spaghetti, so to compensate for that, the car has a really stiff suspension.
According to insiders, the initial design had very low door sills. Then the marketing guys said, "Oh BTW, every C4 is going to be a targa design..."
So to compensate for the lack of a roof structure, designers/engineers thickened up the side sills to add some laterial rigidity!
I had two C4's - first was a '95 automatic, new, my first Vette so it was pretty epic. Got rid of it for a manual '94 that was a Z07 package (handling, matched sized wheels, etc.).
The 2nd car I eventually did LPE long tubes and AFR heads, a Comp CC305 cam and it was *stout* for the time. Put down ~340RWHP and loads of TQ. Fun cars, the exterior holds up well, the interior is painful.
I absolutely loved the clamshell hood that opened up the entire front end of the car (like the GenII Vipers). People still rant and rave about the ZR1 (C4), but after the C5 came out, that glorious engine had to live in a severely dated chassis.
The older kidney busters like 84/85's used to kick ass in the A/X (even those with the funky 4+3 tranny).

Not sure why you like the C4, but to each their own. There was a drastic improvement in quality from C4 to C5. I had a chance to ride in a C4 once & it was pretty much garbage, not even close to the C5 in terms of quality build, fit & finish. Rattled quite a bit & the things about Vettes is that 1 or 2 generations past & they look like a badly worn bowling ball.
