Default CA Tax question

Hello,

If I am purchasing a car from a private party, would there still be taxes that needs to be paid?

I am just trying to see what my initial cost would be for all the fees and what not.

Thank you.

Yes, they will charge you sales tax when you register the car.

The amount will be based on the price on the bill of sale. For lower-priced cash transactions I, uh, have seen people write the bill of sale for less than the actual price to reduce the tax impact on the buyer.

of course you run the risk of getting in trouble for tax evasion, then.

thanks guys,

lets say the car is $24k and has registration until oct. 06.

so to calculate my initial cost on fees and etc would be 8.25% tax in LA ... plus what other fees would be involved?

thanks for all the replies! im a first time car buyer and would like to consider all the factors and not have any unexpected expenses later on when i do the transaction.

Steven... no shit Sherlock.

Hpark, are you an IRS agent, admirer of our tax system, or what? Giving the finger over some friendly obviously illegal advice is a little extreme, eh?

Well, it is a felony.

But they are unlikely to track you down unless so make it real obvious (aka $1)
