2000 el dorados and sevilles sts's can be had for around 10k. are these cars reliable? how's the northstar? would they be a good choice for a comfortable car?
or would a lincoln ls for about 10-12k be a better choice?

the Cadillacs are very reliable. The overhead cam V8 engines are great, with displacement on demand, safety features such as the ability to run for periods of time without coolant, and deliver excelllent gas mileage. They also come optioned with numerous luxury features, from adaptive sets to sophisticated traction and stability control systems.

The Cadillacs are have more room than the Lincoln LS models, but they are also a different kind of car. The LS cars are RWD, designed as BMW competitors, while the Cadilacs are FWD, designed as more luxurious coupes and sedans. I'd drive them both to see which you prefer. The Northstar engines make a ton of power and the Cadillacs are quite quick, while the Lincoln LS cars are lighter and will have different driving dynamics.

I have an unexplainable enthusiasm toward Cadillacs. Everyone and their momma has a BMW, and Caddy's have a sort of soul that you can't really find in a Lexus.

However, the 98-04 Seville is currently one of the less-loved models. I still like 'em, though. Try to go for an 03-04 model, and you should have less to worry about. 2000-02 models have some bugs in the system.

because they are RWD, smaller luxury-minded sedans that put more emphasis on driving dynamics than a cush ride. Oh, and because when it was released, that's what the folks at Lincoln marketing said.

Practice what you preach :/

Because Ford said as much when they first released the LS. It doesn't take a PHd to see some of the BMW styling cues in the LS's exterior.

As for the Cadillacs, the Northstar is a great engine, which is in part why GM chose to use the Northstar as the basis for some of their newer V6s. You shouldn't have any major problems with them. The Sevilles and STSs were in general nice cars, it's just a shame they weren't RWD. Their interiors are still pretty nice though.

True, LS was originally designed to compete with the Euros. Too bad it doesn't.

My dad has been buying them off lease and then putting 60K on them in two years, for the past 20 years, and has had minimal problems. One year the anti-theft box shorted out in a late 80's Seville, and needed replacement. I don't think anything on the interior has every been a problem.

On the other hand, the heated seats in the new BMW 7 series he picked up last year burned a hole in the seat and through his jacket. I think he switched to BMW just to have something different, and while he likes the car, it easily has had more minor issues issues in the short time he's owned it than he has ever had with the Cadillacs he's had. That's not to say I think all BMW's are crap, but when I add his experience to the experiences of all the people I've known who've had BMW's, Cadillacs are better, more reliable cars, especially the interior electronics.
