Nah, I'll bet a lot of people who bought plain vanilla 2012 Civics wouldn't know the difference or care if they did. They got what they wanted, an inexpensive and reliable little sedan that gets good fuel mileage. They're happy.

I hear you. '12 isn't a bad car, and I don't think any Civic will ever be a bad car. I believe for once though that this Civic really didn't have more appeal than it's competition.

And as the article and JonBoy have said, sales have picked up recently. It will take more than a few bad magazine reviews to shake people out of wanting a Civic from past word of mouth/experiences/etc, by and large. Though it seems Honda still wanted to respond to the bad press that was out there.

Don't have to say a word - it's already been said and this is old news, either way.

From May through November, the only full months that the new Civic was in showrooms, the car's sales were nearly 109,000. The Cruze led the way at almost 140,000, followed by the Corolla at 118,000, and the Elantra at 110,000.

But last month, with supplies moving toward normal after the earthquake and floods, the Civic led all compacts in sales, according to Autodata Corp.

Despite the criticisms, the Civic still has a strong following of loyal customers, says Jeff Dyke, executive vice president of operations for Charlotte, North Carolina-based Sonic Automotive Inc., a dealership chain that includes Honda dealers.

"I can't keep one on my lot," he says.
Even with the "crappy" Civic, people still scoop it up like hot cakes, so imagine it being improved next year.

You guys are missing the point. There was a time where the domestics rested on their laurels and just went about their business because sales were good. To Honda's credit, they don't want to make the same mistake.
I don't understand why it's so hard for some to admit that the current civic, while a good car, doesn't live up to the standard of the previous civics. Yeah, majority of consumers won;t know the difference, I mean look at how many on these boards say BMWs interiors are world class despite the interior paint cracking, door handles creaking, etc. But if this trend were to continue, and the competition keeps putting out strong products, it's just a matter of time.
Kudos to Honda for fixing the problem before it even became one. That said, shame on Honda for giving in.
