Anyone out there with experience in these 3 cars?

The E46 M3 is more powerful but the E36 M3 is lighter. Which car gives a driving experience more similar to that of the s2k?

I'm wondering which 4 seater would most closely emulate the s2k driving experience.

I'd mention the wrx and lan evo but i prefer rwd.

I've not driven an E36, but the E46 feels like a LOT more car. Yes, it has a lot more grunt to go with it, but it just doesn't feel as tossable as the s2k.

E36 based on a couple of brief test drives in both gens...but the E46 is still a sweet ride that I'd be happy to drive every day.

It's a trick question -- the answer's the E30 M3:

Under 2900 lbs., 195 hp from a high-revving four cylinder, sports car suspension tuning rather than the GT tuning of the E36 and E46... the list goes on and on.

E46 is a heavy car. It's faster than the S, but not as fun to drive IMO. I haven't driven the E36, but on paper it's closer to the S2000.
