Considering purchasing a Ferrari..
I have nothing to add other than Magnum PI was a classic great TV show. I preferred Don Johnson's Ferrari to Magnum's, although both shows were great.

Go a year older on the 911 for a '98.
It's the last year of the air-cooled version. Talk about a sweet sound.
Alas, I recently noticed that '98 Carrera S prices are in the $60k range.
That's nearly MSRP when they were new!
But to reinforce what QUICKAG said, if an Elise is too expensive for you than an '83 Ferrari is as well.
Look into a late 90s NSX perhaps? You can always put a Comptech supercharger on it if you feel you need some additional power.

Have you thought of a Detomaso Pantera? They are pretty exotic, you do need to make sure that it is in good order (rust, electrics, etc.) but it seems to fit your price range, and may be a little cheaper to maintain. the Big Ford 351C is pretty reliable and easy to upgrade...
Another cool vehicle I was considering was a '95-'97 993 Porsche 911. They were the last air-cooled 911s. They're really good looking and supposedly pretty reliable... they also get a great club in PCA.
Check Hemmings.com for the Pantera and Autotrader.com for the 911.

bkw, I would highly recommend this route. Now, Panteras ain't cheap either...probably about as much as this 308 is to buy a used one. But I think you'd be just as happy, and the car will probably be lighter than a 308, quicker, and may even handle better. I know a Pantera owner (I did a photo shoot for his 1972 L smooth-back), and they are plenty awesome.
Another added bonus is, the Pantera owners club, from my experience, is a tight knit group of guys that love their cars and love to run them. You could pick any time it seems and they'll clear their schedule to do a cruise of some sort, or anything to get out in their rides. I've been to one of their club meetings and they are good guys. If you want any side perks like this with whatever car you get, you should seriously look into one of these cars.
Put simply, if you want the looks without the added cost of the F badge, the Pantera is as good as it gets.
For about the same money as an 83 308 you could also buy a solid 911 Turbo (930 series). Compared to the Ferrari maintenance costs would be much lower. Although the Porsche would not turn heads as well as the Ferrari, performance would be in a whole other league. I've not driven a 308, but I've had quite a bit of time with both a 930 and a 348ts (both formerly owned by my brother). I would definitely choose the Porsche over the Ferrari for everything but pose value.
I've been though restorations on a '75 308GT4, and a '79 308GTS and I've had my share of play time with the injected cars (308GTBi, 308GTS QV and 328GTS). My recomendation is to either go with an earlier carb car or pony up the extra bucks for a 328. The early US injected cars were crap and the QV was not much better.
My personal fav is the GT4...it doesn't have the Pininfarina looks, but in my opinon it was easier to work on and seemed to handle better than others except for the 328.

After a quick discussion with the wife last night, we'll be going out to our local Chevy dealership to go check out one of their 3 letter offerings. Though I dislike the fact of making monthly payments, if this car is all everyone says it is, well..
