I would think the safety thing and the emissions.... I think that engine is not emission compliant.
Can you get around it??? - I think some people have titled their's as "kitcars", but that is one of those things if you have the $ to burn, go for it.... I think in florida they just recently impounded a bunch of "illegal" elise's that someone was bringing here on a temporary permit, then selling.

There was a company called Sun International importing them with an Integra Type R engine in it and they were street legal. I raced an Elise(not legal) on the track and it was incredibly fast. I couldn't go through the corners nearly as fast as he could.

i for one am glad that it has to meet standards to be allowed on the streets.....these regulations are what are saving lives.....imagine a 1500 lb car with no bracing or airbags.....the first accident would almost certainly be the last. if the weight got one miligram over 2000, I would have a fit......it can certainly be done. It would also be able to have the needed equipment to save the occupant's lives.
