Should he ditch the car ASAP? I've been reading bad news about this car on the internet when the light comes on. Anybody with some links that I could guide him would be nice too, thanks.

Could be as simple as a loose gas cap. Get the code out.

 

I know of somebody who had a Chrysler Concord or something (looked like a bottom feeding catfish?) I dunno if it has the same engine as the Intrepid, but when their CEL came on it was a problem with sludge in the oiling system. A common problem, turned out - none of us were sure why though. Anyway, the reports were that once an engine started with that issue, there was nothing could be done except an expensive rebuild. So they sold it and are happily driving a Mazda3.
