The S2Ki member who owns the 458 Italia needs to chime in on this one!
I contacted my dealer about the recall and I was told my car isn't affected since the 458s being recalled are those produced prior to July. I asked the dealer how flammable the adhesive was and he said they brought it outside and it lights off like napalm!

What I don't understand is why Ferrari would use an adhesive to attach the heat shield under the rear fenders. I'm no science guy, but that adhesive would be flammable right? Then again the Enzo and Scuderia used adhesives I thought...

I'm glad Ferrari recalled the 458, they did the right thing.

Even cooler is they are replacing ALL burned 458s.

Although I think Ferrari should have isolated this issue, you think they would have with all the testing that would go into crafting this kind of a car. Nobody is perfect though.

^I'd think that, in general, the adhesive would be flammable only until it has cured. As in, after it dries it's no longer flammable. I guess that's not the case here.

Adhesives, when used correctly can be a great thing for holding parts together. They don't require drilling holes for fasteners, they don't affect the structure under the adhesive in many cases. It's also possible the heat shield is delivered with an adhesive layer preattached to make the overall assembly easier. I haven't studied the design used on the 458 so this is all speculation but do consider that many race cars and airplanes are largely glued together. The Lotus Elise chassis is also glued together. The rivets used on many airplanes and aluminum monocoque race cars were largely their to hold things together until the glue setup. Basically when done right glues can be a great way to bond two items together. However, they also can be done incorrectly. I'm not certain that Ferrari will share what went wrong with most of us but I do suspect they had good reasons to choose glue and will likely continue to do so in the future while not repeating this sadly public mistake.

That's hot.
I don't want to fan the flames here, but this is going to spark up a firestorm of controversy as heated owners start burning up over this recall.

Sooo... I parked mine in my driveway and it totally disintegrated. All the paperwork and was in it and the ashes blew away in a wind storm. How do I get my new 458? My first one was red, but I think I want a white one.
