Ford dumping Lincoln Continental, 22K workers
What a retarded company they are. Not for dumping the Conti but just in general. They obviously have no plan whatsoever, just dump the non sellers and leave a completely redundant car lineup in place.

The Lincoln Continental needed to be dumped. Our neighbor has one and for the life of me, I don't know why they bought it. Ugly as sin!
I believe with the introduction of the LS and Ford's recent aquirement of Jaguar, the Continental either needed some "extensive" reworking or dumping. . .the later to have taken place!
Oh well. . .while on the subject, anyone else think the new Explorer is "BLAH" as well? Just curious. Not that the other Explorer's were nice but the new one is tacky looking and the interior is very 80's! My company supplies new Ford Explorer's to our IT people and I drove one the other day to take some "banker boxes" to storage. Most certainly not an appealing vehicle!

I have to agree with you on that one. I think that is the biggest mistake that Ford has made. I hope they don't make the Ranger match it!! Then I will have another decision about Make/Model when it comes time for another Truck

The continental has no place in the Lincoln lineup, and it's not a profitable vehicle. With the LS in the lineup, there's no reason to keep the Conti. Same for the Mercury Cougar and Villager, and the Ford Escort (Focus anybody?), which are also getting the ax. The cars aren't profitable, and don't really have a unique category in the lineup.
It should be noted that the UAW and CAW will fight tooth and nail to keep the plants open and keep the employees employed, even if they aren't making cars anymore

Things are quite desperate at FoMoCo. Besides the damage inflicted by Jack "the Knife" Nasser, they've had too many years of being fat, dumb, and happy (again). The company is hemmoraging money and morale is in the crapper. It's a downright unhealthy place to work. At the present rate of market share erosion they'll be #3 by the end of 2002.
If I'd been laid off from FoMoCo I'd consider it a mixed blessing. Hopefully Bill F can turn things around in a few years.

i recently had a chance to drive the new Explorer for a weekend in the mountains, and despite its plain looks, it actualy drives quite well for a truck of that size. In fact, it handles much better than the previous model Exploders. Probably has alot to do with its independant suspension (talk about "Its about time!"). Now if they would only get a clue and do that with the Mustangs... .
Always sad to see a company like Ford shutting down factories because its management has no plan. The management make mistakes and the workers pay. I sincerley hope that the US automakers figure it out soon though.
