Otherwise IMHO I would get something cheap and reliable car since he's going to college. Less bills to worry about during school. When he's done he can buy whatever he wants. Just my two cents.
Cheap and easy and more money for beer.

That was what he was going to get, but they're like sold out around here. He needs to like get a car within the next few days because they're family car broke down and his mom is going to take over his car while he gets another car. I suggest all the cars suggested and he's going to try to look at them tomorrow.
Also, its very hard to find an EVO in decent shape for <$20k, if you do it would be high mileage and most likely requires more maintenance than usual. A decent EVO VIII will run you $22K OTD.

I agree. I don't know what his situation is, but if he's going to college and living in a dorm or apartment building in a college town, why get something that you'll need to worry about?

Slightly used Cooper S? some might see it as a girly car but if he likes girls that could be a good thing.
Since he's likely going to need to move "stuff" I like the hatch idea. MS3, Mazda 3, GTI, even the Fit Sport.

Hmm... I'd suggest getting an S2000 just because they're fun to drive and if you haven't noticed yet, this is an S2K forum w/ S2K enthusiasts, so if your "friend" wants to fit in, he better shape up or ship out.

I think he has $20k to spend on a car....not necessarily $20k to his name. Either way, he's looking for car advise not financial advise.
If his situation is living in an apartment in a college town, nice cars aren't worth the trouble, in my opinion.
