Default Friend needs help picking a car.

A friend of mine has got the new car itch. He wants to trade in his 98 or 99 A4 avant for a new/newer car. Price post trade in needs to be the $30k range. The A4 is probably worth $6000-6500. He is looking for a 2+2 or a 4 dr. Its basically a fun daily driver that his wife can take on 150+ shopping trips to Dallas(so it must be safe). He already has a Tahoe(tow vehicle), a 964 Turbo(wknd fun car) and a Miata turbo(track car).

So what would you guys recommend. So far, we have narrowed it down to:

1. A3 hatchback.
2. Used G35 coupe.
3. Mini cooper s.
4. E90 325i.

He is more of a german car guy. He doesn't care for the looks of the TSX, TL, or RX-8. I have mentioned a Audi TT with V6 and DSG. However I don't know if we can get it in the price range.

Thanks for your help,

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy kwanza, Peace on Earth.

A used S4 fits into that slot as well and would be a familiar face to an A4 owner ...

e90 325i (first choice)
TSX
A3/A4

I really don't think the mini S belongs here since it's such a small car

imo, it'd be hard to beat a 3-series, maybe an IS350 but that's way out of the price range.

Cooper's are pretty safe for their small size so I would go for the Cooper S with the Works package. It would be a blast to drive and it has the German ties with BMW.

He used to have a 2001 S4. He had a few issues with the turbos. So I think that is probably out of the question.

Personally, I feel that the 325i would be ideal. However, his thinking is that for another $8k he can have a 330i with sport/18" rims. Then he said if I was going to spend $41k for a 330i then why don't I just get a C6 with paddle shifters for $45k. So you see the problem.

Keep then coming.
