Genuine Competitors to the S2000?
In three years the best step up if you are looking for performance would be a used C6 Z06. At that point they should be in the 50K range for a used one (give or take). And right now there is nothing that will compete with it at it's price point. It's exotic performance at a 1/3 of the price.
BTW...Give your S some time, I'm betting you may not want to get rid of it at the end of your lease. It's not the fastest thing out there but it's fun as hell and can be made much faster by adding S/C and gears which is cheaper than buying a whole new car. So I would save up over the lease period and then invest in the S/C, gears and some bolt ons. This would give you a car that will run 12's and still have great handling characteristics.

I guess it depends what you mean by "competitive." Competitive in what aspect? Price? Performance? Value? Driving fun? Practicality?
The obvious marketing/sales competitors of the S2000 in the sub-$40,000 weekend sports car include:
BMW Z3
Porsche Boxter
Mazda Miata
Pontiac Solstice
Audi TT/roadster
Nissan 350Z/roadster
Lotus Elise
Chevy Corvette

I agree with aklusarits. Depending on what really matters to you in a car I could see the Z3, Boxster, Miata, and Solstice being cross-shopped.
I'm not saying they are better. I'm also with Suzukaboy, at the S2000's price point it is the best car IMO.

This thread is all over the place. When I read this response:
"Right now nothing really compares at the price point" I had to check and make sure this thread wasn't from 2001.
On the track the biggest competitors at the same price range are:
C5 Vette and E36 M3 (used), Evo and STi. Of course if you've never been on a track a Miata will school yer butt even if you're driving an F430.

The new 350z is actually slower than before... Lost too much torque
And I wasn't sure, but are you implying that a solsctice or sky is step up from the s2k?? Even there "special" versions wouldn't be a step up even they are faster, I doubt they will be, but if they are I would still think going to one of those is a huge step down... How could you consider a gm product quality as a step up???

It's weird, the 350Z used to have this "HUGE" mid-range... Now, with the rev-up engine, the torque curve is as flat as a board. I dunno if it's slower, but the drive sure is BORRRING.
