Giant Stereo Systems
Why is it that you see all these cars with lightweight carbon fibre parts, racing wheels, turbo chargers, racing seats... and giant speaker systems in the trunk? I just dont understand it. Seems like people are turbo-charging their cars just to haul around their speakers.

Some are audiophiles and some are into the culture of car audio, which is often combined with performance. You don't "get" that. No big deal. Just remember lots of people don't "get" the S2000. Doesn't make it any less special or enjoyable to the rest of us.

due to the poor acoustics of a ragtop, i don't think the S is an ideal fit for an audiophile, speaking as i once was one. however, i love convertibles, and if i was still big into car audio, i'd probably get an S and throw something heavy in the trunk.
if i had a subwoofer in the car, i'd still look at turbo/SC, but the only cf i'd be terribly interested in (for performance) is a decent spoiler for a bit of extra downforce at higher speeds. maybe the sub helps rear wheel downforce too
also, subwoofers and much of the audio equipment can come out on track days pretty easily. if someone were to buy expensive CF parts for weight and a stereo for fun but they pulled the stereo equipment whenever tracking the car, i would understand the thought process 100%.

Yeah, guys at autocrosses don't understand how I can stand having a heavy amp and sub in my trunk that make me slower. My audio installer doesn't understand why I won't install heavy sound insulation all over to make my audio sound better. Can't have everything I guess...

Having an amp and a 12" sub in the trunk is not that heavy. Probably like 20-25 lbs max! People that go full bore though with 2 subs, 2 amps, custom trunk fit, etc. can rack up the weight though.
A little thumping is good for some.
Think about it. I weigh 160 and with an amp and sub in the back, that would bring total weight to what, 185? There are some big dudes out there driving an S that are well north of 200 lbs., so really I don't think it affects the car that much.

It's just the way some people roll. I was concerned about weight when I did the soundsystem on my S2000, but I still did a soundsystem on my s2000.
The best setups are quickly and easily removable for track events or autox though.

At auto-x driver skill is FAR more important than 50 lbs of extra weight. You put 50 lbs in the trunk of Tom Berry's car (or a whole passenger!)and I'll bet he still shaves MULTIPLE seconds off your time. And if you are good enough that weight matters you probably aren't adding any stereo gear to your nationally competitive car.
When I auto-x'd my Z06 my sub and 5-channel amp were easily removed, not that I was really THAT good...
