The environment is not a political issue. It affects everybody equally.

Why again is it a bad thing that temperature of the earth is rising? (And I not at all convinced that increased CO2 levels are causing any such rise). Why is it bad that some species get extinct? If the dinosaurs hadn't died we wouldn't be around today. If the water level rises there will be more ocean, more room for fishies, more species of fishies!!!! So what if some animals die off? Other more adapted animals will evolve to take their place. This is the natural course of life. How conceited are we to think that we are doing something so radical that changes the way the earth works. We are nothing but another species living on a gigantic rock that was around for billions of years before us, and will be around for billions of years after. We are not altering how life on earth works, nor are we negativly impacting the future species of earth.
There's one thing that you forget, that we as human beings have that no other mammal or creature has exhibited, at least not on the same level that we exist, and that is higher intelligence. We had the ability to create this thing called a nuclear bomb, atomic bomb, etc. Weapons of mass destruction that can wipe out most of civilization as we know it. Mostly all other creatures that lived and roamed the earth before us did not have the intelligence level to create such things. They only acted on instinct to survive and reproduce, nothing more. Perhaps there was a low level of though process going on, but with less brain mass, most didn't have the resources to think about their actions and create things.
Ever heard of the saying "to smart for your own good"? That applies to us as we have created, manufactured, and utilized things that I believe contributed and still contribute to the conditions that we have today.
You have NO evidence to backup your assertion that we are not impacting the future species of earth. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that we are making some sort of impact, how big, we do not know but we do know that there is an impact.
But go ahead and go back into your cave and hide your eyes with your hands, ignorance is bliss..

Wow, a truly ignorant response.

As he sees it we are just another species that has not been around long (in relative terms) and probably won't be here a very long time in the future. Frankly it is a pretty realistic view.
Humans have a very short tenure compared to other creatures on this planet and with the possibility of doing ourselves in, or not making it through a meteor strike, or dying out with climate change, or some other demise, odds are we won
[QUOTE=cdelena,Jul 12 2006, 11:11 PM]I didn't think it was ignorant, just not politically correct.

It's funny I view your attitude as ignorant. Yes humans impact the earth and its creatures more so then any species. But the point is, whether you acknowledge it or not, there is nothing special about us, the current state and climate of the earth, or the species that inhabit it. In 1,000 years there will be thousands of new species and thousands of extinct ones, whether we burn all the fossil fuels in the world or not. In 100,000 years not only will most species be completly different, but so will the entire climate of the earth. We will obviously effect how those species evolve, but who are you to say a certain type of fly is better then another? Nature has a way of evening everything out.
I guess you won't be having any kids of future family to worry about so it's ok to be selfish.
You can assume that there is nothing special about us, but you don't have any conclusive proof of that. And even if there isn't, fact is, we're still accelerating the rate of our own demise, but it appears that you don't really care as long as you're not seeing it right?
