Default Help me negotiate on a new car

Hi all.

Since I'm in the Air Force and being in the military in general I can get discounts on cars from certain manufacturers. I also am a member of the USAA which has its own car buying program through dealers to basically get cars on average $500 above invoice.

My question for you all is can I negotiate or add other discounts/rebates on cars after the USAA price?

For example, if I wanted a BMW 135i with red leather and the M sports package the prices are:

Invoice: $36,790
MSRP: $39,425

USAA price: $36,890

I've never bought a new car before and didn't know if invoice is the lowest for anything to buy a car. I figure so, but then I hear if you start trading in cars and stuff then it varies.
Thanks for the advice S2ki!

Can you find a dealer that will actually do that is the question. Also, you need to add more to the invoice such as training ($180 bucks on every BMW plus MACO fees that can be from $200 to $400 additional dollars).

Well ok maybe not a BMW then...

G8's I get get a GT for 32k
a GXP for 34k

which is less than invoice by 5k!

370z Touring with sport package for $100 off invoice...

so tempting...

and yes I have been able to find dealers around a 100 mile radius from Corn Country.

I have USAA also, Anything they do you can do yourself. Some times they have good rates but they couldn't match any of BMW's rates.

Google "holdback" and do some calculations.

Keep in mind that whoever sells you the car is on a "mini" deal. A mini deal is where salesperson don't make any commission besides what the dealership pays per unit sold. How do I know? Because I used to sell cars.

USAA is www.zag.com, they use a one price model based on data from truecar.com. They will charge you right in the middle of the bell curve. Check out this blog post for some info on it:

Zag (USAA) will put you right in the middle of that bell curve. It's an OK price, but it's not what I would call good. The cars we have sold lately have been significantly lower.

If you were in calif or oregon I could help you out. Good luck.

I'm sure you can do better than that on a G8.

I have seen a few G8's GT's around my area that have been sitting on the lot since Feb. I'm sure it is the same everywhere.

You won't find it on a BMW.

Yep. And Zag's only mission is to create profit for Zag. When a credit union signs on with them, they're no longer playing the regular credit union roll anymore. Although I'm sure the credit union signs on with Zag to cut their own internal costs for these services, but Zag charges the dealers and you'll find that the dealers who do business with Zag (in some markets) might not be the best for you.

I could hook you up with Black Nugget - he is an Internet Sales Person for Checkered Flag BMW in Virginia Beach. If you don't mind coming here to pick the car up? I work there too, but he's the man to help you.

I'm not on S2Ki at all hours of the day, so if you want some advice or help feel free to email me: axsnyder <at> checkeredflag.com
