Here's the 'problem' with the M3
Well of course if you add up all of the options it's a $70K. Duh!
But some won't tack on every single option under the sun. The Cold Weather and Premium Packages aren't necessary. If you're planning aftermarket wheels, skip the 19" wheels option. If you prefer to row your own gears, skip the SMG option. Heated seats, power shade are unnecessary. The stock stereo system should be good enough for most, unless you're an audiophile, so the Premium Sound option can be skipped.
The only option I would consider almost necessary is the Technology Package for the M Drive.
For my M Coupe, I went with the base configuration. No options. I didn't need the Premium, Cold Weather and Navi packages. I compared the regular sound system against the premium sound system, and the difference is minimal. The premium offered slightly better bass.

I agree with the OP on the whole--why would a true sports car enthusiast get an M3 with a few options when the GTR can be had for another $5000-$7000? And how about a Z06?
the GT-R is going to have crazy mark ups so the comparison has to be OTD price.
