Horse Power wars, How much is too much?
I know that there are already cars with 1000+ hp but my question is when will we see cars like Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda etc start making them 1000+ hp from the factory?
Dodge and Chevy are already into the 800+ hp from the showroom floor.
I'm thinking at this rate, by 2012, Vipers and ZO6's will be there.
I personally think it's out of control.
Any thoughts?

I agree, it is out of control, but it does make the new cars coming out more interesting than ever.
I remember when I had my GS400 in '99, 300hp was quite a lot of power in a sedan, now it's nothing. MB has cars with over 600hp, granted they are AMG but it isn't that long ago when 300-400 was considered a lot of power.
It's mainly the US market that causes this hp war, since gas is still cheap here.

I doubt we'll ever see that level of power (1000hp) in a semi-inexpensive car. It will remain the realm of expensive toys, because a number that high will start spiking questions among the public whether all this power is a good thing or not. It'll start becoming a thing where people will fear drivers of such cars, and then the APB will go out to get the market to dial it back some.
Beyond the obvious fact that nothing close to that much power is legally usable on the street, it doesn't make any sense. But at the same time, I don't know how manufacturers can continue to go upwards like they have been. Through the 80s, 90s and early 00s, it was a rather slow creep up, and then since 2003 it's been a never-ending assault to get to the highest number possible in a given segment. Pretty soon we'll wonder why we even bought into such simple things.

i think the HP wars were driven by the economic boom and cheap gas of the 90's ... granted the high end cars still have a lot of HP...
we see 600 HP Mercedes's... but realize those Mercedes 65's cost almost $200K... so hardly an average luxury car... Mercedes has always been relatively conservative in the HP of their mainstream cars...
its always whoever is lagging in sales that will use the HP wild card.. cause HP has and will always be a selling point for luxury car buyers... Mercedes lagged in sales in the late 90's and early '00's... so they upped the HP game...
i think average HP will not grow significantly like it did, now that gas is much more expensive... although the rich are getting richer... so there will be some HP increase at the top end...

what scares me the most is in 10-20 years when 500+ hp cars become cheap enough for first time drivers to buy.
But we'll be driving hovercars by then, so no danger to us.....

at least as HP is going up, manufacturers are trying to keep pace in the handling department, making some of these cars easier to drive than they would have been years ago with this much power
