How bad is the E46 M3 engine really?

i have heard some horrable things about them and my best friend just bought one like 6 months ago...

i would hate to think that such a great car could have that serious of a problem..if so have they done anything about it yet?

anyone with some first hand experiance? or straight info?

that would be great!

My friend fried his engine because his oil pan was leaking.
