Default How come the Miata never comes up here?

I've never seen anyone mention the Miata in these forums when comparing the S2k to other cars.

I'm curious, has anyone ever compared the Miata to the S2k? Perhaps the Mazdaspeed Miata would be a decent comparison.

Then you aren't reading these forums enough!

The Miata is the universal answer for every question asked in Car Talk with the word "cheap" in it:
Cheap fun sports car? Miata.
Cheap roadster? Miata.
Cheap track car? Miata.
Cheap RWD car? Miata.
Cheap weekend project? Miata.
Cheap car with massive hp? Miata with turbo/V8/rotary

Search and you'll see.

I would take a newer Miata as a DD over my S2000 (early AP1)

Why?
Bose stereo, more torque at starts, better lighting (fogs), safety features (side air bags), retractable hardtop option, the list goes on.

Miata needs a suspension upgrade though. My friend keeps wanting to upgrade his suspension because it is too soft for any fun/quick driving compare to our S.

Heck, even discussions on the Ariel Atom sometimes bring up the Miata here.

More torque at starts? What gives you that idea? The S2000 has more torque (162 ft-lbs vs 140 ft-lbs), they both have a 4.10 rear end, the Miata has slightly tighter gears in the transmission but certainly not enough to make that much of a difference (~18% in 1st, 10% in 2nd and 3rd, and it drops off from there). 1st gear would help you minorly if you calculate torque to the wheels but we're talking 3 ft-lbs more to the wheels and then it would fall well under the S2000 for all other gears.

Fog ligs and halogens vs HID lights on the S2000? I'll take HIDs every time.

The Miata might have better airbags but it's a few hundred pounds lighter, too, so it's going to get bounced around more. I'll take an S2000 vs a pickup than a Miata vs a pickup every time.

I agree that the Miata would be a more relaxing DD but that's about it.

Pretty harsh critique dude. I think he is looking at a weight:torque comparo. Also the MX-5's 140ft/lb torque peak comes much lower(5000rpms) than the S2000s(hell the S2000's peak is above the MX-5's REDLINE). So this makes the MX-5 easier to use, especially in city traffic. As for the headlights, the MX-5 has HID's available too(along with fogs so I guess there is some advantage to the MX-5 there as well.) I always find MX-5 haters funny- there would be no S2000 if it wasn't for the MX-5. The S2K is a better car than the MX-5(as it should be for the difference in $$$) but the MX-5 is no slouch either!

Miata is a girly car and teh gay

j/k. I love the Miata. But I don't understand why many on s2ki (maybe except for Car Talk, Vintage, and Racing) really hate the Miata when most non-enthusiast women think the S2000 looks just as "cute" as the Miata
