Default How to prevent repeat car theft?

Supposed you have a car, and it is stolen but recovered, what is the realistic thing one can do to protect the car from being stolen again in the future? It may not be the whole car, it could be the stereo, the rims/tires, the seats, or anything that is stolen. The thing is that once the thief knows where the car is, and how easy it is to steal it (or steal from it), the thief can come back at any time in the future to do it again.
I've done a search and some of the opinions previously offered include:
- Get a better alarm that is harder to disable/bypass.
- Move.
- Always park in a locked garage (not always an option).
- Always remove a key ignition component when car is parked (it was the distributor cap in the old days)
- Install a 24-hr video system to watch the car (doesn't really help to prevent thefts).
- Get a dog to watch the car.

To me, moving seems to be the only good solution, but it is drastic. Are there new thoughts on how to prevent a repeat theft? Also I'd like to know how likely is a repeat theft after a car is recovered? Anyone with first-hand experience with car (or things from the car) being stolen? Thanks.

That would suck if you moved right next door to the thief.

Just curious if there is a component in any modern car that can be removed to disable the ignition AND it can be removed and re-installed repeatedly without causing excessive wear. Plus it is small enough that it can be carried in the pocket when walking away from the car.

I had a decent stereo system (head unit & sub-tube) stolen out of a Jeep Wrangler when I lived in upstate NY. Professional thief, my Clifford alarm was deactivated by cutting the battery line and the removal was almost cleaner than the install (zero dash damage). The NEXT NIGHT, after my report to the cops, he/they came back for the two amps under the seat. That was ballsy, parked outside the window of the 2nd story room where I slept. I didn't even think to protect them again.

I have not much new to suggest, other than a burning desire, and daydreams, to meet my mystery guest at 3 AM in person for some attitude adjustment. I did switch to a pager-style alarm with a dedicated battery back-up after that. Did not happen again.

We used to put a shut off valve in the gas line. Drilled hole in floor board and had valve control under seat. Could put an electrically controlled valve in and have switch hidden. Then you aren't drilling the hole in the floorboard. Won't go far without gas.

I would say if you want to protect your car, I would get a top of the line alarm system and maybe "the club" or the other one that goes on the clutch. As far as the stereo of seats.... I say for the stereo, I would get a detachable face, I can't really think of anything else to protect the stereo.
The seats, if I recall correctly someone on the board said that they bought a security system to bolt down the seats, or something like that.
But I guess it comes down to where you live and where you park.

In Texas we just shoot the thief. Really cuts down on repeat offenses.
