Ice Storm

Heh, you should see Arizona drivers when it rains even a small touch. If you think northwesterners in ice and snow are clueless, watch Arizona natives try to navigate the city when a drizzle blows through.

snow tires are only extra traction in very rare instances around here. they suck in the dry and aren't great in the rain. It's very rare you ever need them. I have lived here and driven here my whole life never with snow tires and have never been in an accident. I just avoid situations that my car isn't ready for. A decent all-season tires, like we have on our van, is good for 99.9% of situations around here. It snowed like 3 times last year, one time for 4-5 inches and the van did great on the all-seasons. I didn't try and scale any 20% grades or anything!

No you don't. I know you like to lecture like you are the cold weather expert, but I have some warm weather tires on my evo and it's no big deal 99.9% of the time here in Portland. I ran the S2000 with summer tires for 4 years here and had 0 accidents and 0 close calls. While, you don't have the option to avoid snow and ice with your job, I do. So like it I said it's not a big deal. I also have access to a car will all-season tires, like I said earlier in the thread, if I need to for some reason.
The point is not everyone needs to have 3 sets of wheels/tires and swap them out whenever it gets cold or if it rains to much. Sometimes in the fall when it can be 75 one day and 40 the next should I change wheels and tires before leaving for work?
My car doesn't fly off the road every time it gets to be < 50 degrees contrary to popular belief....

Sounds exactly like Dallas, strangely enough. Winter lows go from mid 20s to mid 40s, and can vary from one to the other day by day. We also get one or two instances of snow/sleet/wintery mix each year. Nobody has any winter tires around here, though - we either just stay home, or risk getting the car banged up. (And trust me, plenty of cars get banged up during those winter storms.)
I have been to Dallas, but never lived there. I would guess we probably get a few more cold days in the winter, but I don't know for sure. We might have a little less trouble in general here with cold/icy days as many, many people here have AWD cars with all-season tires. I see about a million AWD subys a day up here!
