I'm looking for 40mpg
I'm in the market for a DD that is very fuel efficient. I've narrowed it down the the 92-95 Civic Hatchback(EG) After doing some research i've learned that the fuel economy on those things were AMAZING! Here comes my question. If I were to buy one, would a complete rebuild of the engine allow me to reach near those numbers.
Here are the numbers:
Car weighs about 2100lbs
VX- 47/56mpg-92hp DX-34/40mpg 102hp CX-40/45mpg-70hp
Yes i know, im doing the absolute opposite of what 90% of people that buy this car aftermarket does.
I wouldnt mind creating similiar to this.

Wouldn't the cost of the engine rebuild offset the gas savings?
Unless you drive a whole lot.
Maybe a Vespa or other small scooter?

A freshly rebuilt engine would very likely get worse fuel economy than a well-used, already broken in engine would anyway. An engine does not operate most efficiently until it is well broken in.
If your concern is getting the best fuel economy, you would be better off just replacing the old spark plugs, O2 sensor, and the Catalytic converter with new Honda OE parts. Refreshing those 3 parts on an old car should yield significant fuel economy improvements.

Only if you have the high mileage cams, intake, tires and gearing. Those great mileage numbers don't come for free.
If mileage is the game you might look at a Suzuki Swift/Geo Metro. Better mileage than the Civic but not as easy on the eyes.
