Instant or delayed gratification?
By the way, I've driven a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC (big V8 motor in a large coupe) and I absolutely loved it. It was so solidly built - it felt like it was carved out of a single chunk of steel. Yeah, it was heavy but it was so solid, so stable at serious speeds that I just fell in love with it. Simple but luxurious interior, nice seats, very tasteful for its time. I'd imagine the SL600 will have similar appeal.
While the SL600 isn't my type of car (yet!) for a convertible, it will still be fun in its own right, I'd imagine. Not sure how solid of a car it is but I can guarantee you'll enjoy planting your right foot and feeling a solid, unending wave of torque pushing you constantly back in your seat.
By the way, I'm all about waiting. I figure that you appreciate things more if you wait for them. You also tend to make better decisions.

I'd get a used 911 or a Boxster S before that Mercedes.
It's like getting a Ferrari Testarossa. It was nice in it's day, but it's horribly outdated from a driving and luxury standpoint.
It'd make a nice collector's car for a car enthusiast.
But not so much as a driving vehicle for a driving enthusiast.
