Test-drove a Wrangler Unlimited 4x4 today. Everything seemed okay, including the 6-sp gear box, but nothing spectacular. I'd like to get one, but the EPA gas mileage for it is so bad: 15 and 19 mpg. The Unlimited 4.0L soft-top comes in at almost $22K. Is that an okay price or can I do better? Is there anything I must know prior to getting one? Positives, negatives? Thanks!

I have a '91 and not that familiar with the later models. But, why the unilimited? Unless you're towing or need the little bit of extra room. Put the soft top up and down yourself, my older one is a PITA. You have to store the windows too, don't roll them up, they'll get scratched so quick you can't see out of them. The gas mileage sucks as you noted. Do you want to live with that?

I love my Wrangler for around town. Doesn't bother me on a long highway trip either but no one else likes to ride in it for long. Get the 4.0 if you get one.

 

You know they are replacing it any day now, right? Wait for a good deal on a leftover, or wait for the new model; either way, don't buy yet.

 

Why in God's name do you want an SUV, for the curious...

 

I'd hope so. I thought they already did away with the 4.0...

If it's going to be a weekend toy I say get a used one and save your money.

 

i had a 98 a few years back. lots of fun in the summer and when gas prices were lower.

only functional reliability.

As a 4x4 it needed lots of modification to make it good on the trail. strictly a road vehicle. security is none existant, cant leave anything behind in the vehicle.

my experience with pricing is the wrangler base vehicles are inexpensive but cost goes way up after that.

why buy a suv these days when they are setting them on fire at the street corners?

 

i like the new unlimited that is about to come out. Unless jeep comes out with a diesel option, i wouldn't want to get one.

I agree. The new ones look awesome!! How about an FJ?

 

I Had a '97 and it was alot of fun but the gas mileage seemed to average around 16-17 mpg. If you do any extended highway driving I suggest getting a hardtop because of the excessive wind noise.

You might want to wait until the new model is out however.
