Default Knowledge is power

I work at Advance Auto Parts and I hear some REALLY stupid stuff coming from the mouths of customers all day every day. Let's hear your most ignorant remarks from others?

Here are a couple examples:

"Hi, my cigarette lighter isn't working. Someone told me it could be a spark plug?"

"Hey... um.... last night my turn signals or hazard lights would not work. We were wondering if the fuses were low or something?"

A customer kept having a reoccuring MIL and he kept coming in to have us reset his light so I told him to just disconnect his battery for a while and it will reset itself so he wouldn't keep coming to us. He explained that he had tried that but he disconnected both terminals but then it "didn't have residual power to reset the ecu. That's why you're supposed to only remove one post so the battery can supply enough power to reset the ecu".

"My PCV valve is on the exhaust manifold" He was DEAD set on telling us we were wrong. lol

I'll think of more but let's hear yours!!

Had a customer come in looking for a replacement "Power Band". He really thought there was some kind of device under his valve cover like a wind up model airplane rubber band all double knotted...

i've NEVER worked in an auto parts store for this very reason. i'm not what you call a people person. It's bad enough i worked for a pontiac buick gmc dealer a few years back...i had one guy who insisted he wanted his fuel filter changed because his truck was burning to much gas, so i gave him a quote, then the jackass said it cost too much and he'll change it himself if he can borrow MY tool to do it, i told him no but he kept insising on it, tryed to sneak into my toolbox. Well, things got heated i was hit, so i beat his ass. i wasnt fired but i quit that job soon after

Working at Advanced Auto Parts does not make you a car tech.

Truth. There are just as many idiots working at these places as the people that walk in. Not saying there aren't guys that know what they are talking about (the OP sounds like a good one).

A good friend of mine worked at a few parts stores...he's had all sorts of stories like these. My favorite was...

Him- How may I help you?
Her- I need brake pads.
Him- Ok...what model?
Her- No...for a car...not a model.
Him- Ok? What kind of car is it?
Her- A blue one.

After 18 years in the parts business, I can say one thing with certainty: It's hard to find good customers.

I wish I'd written down all the stupid things I've seen and heard. I really could have written a book...
