Learning to Ride

that is a great piece of advice, as dumb as it sounds I wouldn't have thought to spend time practicing on a bicycle.
Got my first bike at 16. honda cbr 600 rr. Rode out first day and never dropped her in her lifetime with me. I used the stunt bikes for fun and that was in a lot away from the cars.
Just be safe, ride smart, and don't show out.
WATCH for the other drivers. It's fairly common to walk away from an accident not involving a car as long as you are following the rules (speed limit, etc.). I know this from experience. Sliding usually isn't what gets ya.
I'd say grab something you will like for years to come otherwise you won't be happy and will waste that money saved on upgrading to a bigger bike. I have ridden for 7 years now and still swear by a 600 4 banger all day long. Litre bikes are great but in your case you may end up on the other end of the boat with higher insurance and even worse gas mileage.

I think the Suzuki SV650 is a very good bike for beginner riders.
