Default Lease purchase option question

my friend's 01 pathfinder has two months of lease left and thinking about purchasing it. well, he kinda has to because he went over his mileage... way over. so we went to the dealership but they are asking for way more than what the residual value is. residual value is 15.8 but with two months of lease payment minus sec. deposit, it is about 16.3 or something but the dealership is asking 17.5 without the sec. deposit. he says he will charge 500 for him to process this car and won't go down even a dollar. i laughed at him and left. so my question is, can i go to any nissan dealership and try to purchase the car? or can i call nissan directly and purchase it?
in advice would be appreciated.
thanks

Go directly thru Nissan. Call them up. Everything can be done over the phone and thru the mail. Sometimes you can even negotiate the final purchase price. DO NOT GO THRU THE DEALER. Nissan will even offer you financing. Or if he wants to get rid of the car and get another Nissan alot of times the dealer will eat the mileage overage charges for the current lease vechicle if you buy another Nissan or infinity.

you can buy the car at the contracted buy-back price at the end of the leae term - NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

as suggested by bucwheat...go through Nissan Financial (or whatever it's called).
