Isn't that what paperwork on maintenance and PPI is for? A 996 with 100k could've been driven for 5-7k miles a year. That would be just an annual service. There's a lot of 996's out there; parts and expertise in servicing them is readily available. Just about every locale has a Porsche dealer or indy repair shop. If you;re adverse to owning more niche brands, that is understandable.

I also forgot about this. It was such an overblown anomaly on forums that Porsche had an official class action lawsuit for 996s and boxsters.

The internet forums also overstate ringland failures in Subaru apparently. So overstated that there's a class action lawsuit for that too...

It's funny how anecdotal experiences compare with the overall statistical population of probable occurrences. Finally, regarding the 996, the IMS is not the only failure mode to be wary of, as stated in my other post, so even if the motors have had the fix to eliminate that, you still have a whole slew of other potential failures.

I'd rather pay money for a vehicle with generally sound design engineering behind it rather than pay for a bunch of pieces of paper that state that maintenance was done and things that generally are problems shouldn't be just so I can own what is considered a "niche marque".

I'm averse to paying a premium for poorly engineered products simply because they have a niche brand association. Just because something has a "cheap" initial cost to purchase doesn't make it a value bargain.

High revving $20k:

370z
E46 M3
Z4M Roadster. The coupe is probably out of your budget.
E92 M3

RX-8 revs to 9k. Wankel engine is fascinating. Maybe the best handling car on this list. Much cheaper purchase price than your budget but a super problematic car. Engine rebuilds are basically routine maintenance.

i would do a lot of reading on care and maintenance of those BMWs.

of the awd and fwd cars mentioned I think only the evo is interesting. It a very dated (laggy) turbo imho. Phenomenal handling though. Fiesta ST is great but I don’t think it brings a lot to the table given what you have already.
