Still looking and I like some of these suggestions. I'm looking at a lot of oddball cars that are on the high side due to mileage, exclusivity, etc. Found a '97 3000GT VR-4 with 27K miles, 6 speed, 19K. The ultra low mileage alone makes it quite appealing..
A low-mileage VR4 that's been maintained is going to be fairly reliable at least until you get over 100k, but make sure the 60k service (timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley) has been done recently even though it's not at the mileage. The belts go bad with age too and you don't want to have that go on you.

With just bolt-ons you can get a VR4 well into the 12s. If you wanted to replace the turbos and fuel system the sky is the limit. The 6G72 iron block is similar to the DSM/Evo 4G63 in that it can hold insane amounts of power on stock internals. I have heard of people reliably holding 600awhp, and up to 800+ with a little less reliability.

Honestly, if you're looking at a VR4 (which are fat, unreliable pigs), just spend $20k on a low mileage Evo 8/9. It will outperform and outhandle every car in this thread, and gets even better with just a couple grand in mods (you can even get one already tastefully modded for that price.) Mpg on 91/93 once tuned is good, extremely reliable, and an absolute blast to drive. Just dewing it for extra speed/less attention.

Plus resale value is fantastic, especially on the 9's.

They are unreliable with high miles or poor maintenance, but otherwise they're just as good as any other turbo car of that era. And they look infinitely better than an Evo 8/9. I can't disagree with the Evo being a better performer though especially in the handling department.

R129 SL500 1999+, That's what I'm getting next and I'm excited about it. Look for sport package and HID's. Also if you can find one with panoramic hardtop, it was a 6000 dollar option and is pretty cool.

Pontiac Solstice on Autotrader

Not a fan of the interior, but I've always liked these...

^^ good choice for a cheap, fun void filler. Solstice GXP and Sky Redline are 2800lb RWD roadsters with a factory turbo. The soft top is manual and the interior is crap from what I hear though

I'm selling a very low mileage 04 STI. Just a little over 17k miles. Definitely falls in your price range and it would leave you a little extra to tinker with

Settled on a car... 2002 S2000. Sebring on black, 103k miles, $6500 from a friend. Too good a deal to pass. Will be a great "beater."
