Red face Mazda: "Next MX-5 will be 2200 lbs"

Mazda seems serious about making the 2012 MX-5 a true light sports car, aiming for its original 1989 weight as a target for the new one. 50 mpg too.

I'd think seriously about picking one up at that weight with "more power". If they could kick out 180 hp at 2200 lbs, you'd have a car with nearly the power-to-weight ratio of an S2000 with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid.

However, it's currently rated at 28mpg on the highway. I don't see how they'll nearly double that number while reducing weight and putting out more power. That's a lot of performance upgrading in a single model change. The article says a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency which would mean more like 32mpg on the highway...

Fwiw, thats 300lb off the current model - Mazda has been very good about keeping weight down. 200hp as a goal would be great imo.

Heck yeah - at 2200 lbs and 200 hp, it'd be a no-brainer for an enthusiast on a budget. That's a better PTW ratio than the S2000 for less money with lower weight and better fuel economy.

The last I saw was Mazda had ~150hp from the Sky-G, but I'm hoping there's a higher powered version, possibly a Mazdaspeed version.

I would get one too, if all of this comes true.

No pics, just more details. 2012 release, 2,200 pounds, SKY-G engine, rumored to have 150 hp and ~45-50 mpg.
