If Mazda follows the way they've been going w/ the Miata/MX-5, if they reduce the weight, they'll probably reduce the power.
The power went up incrementally in the last decade or so but the weight did too.Every time they got 5HP or 10HP more out of the engine, the car gained ~200-300lbs.

150 hp is fine for a 2200 lb car. Didn't anyone watch the Top Gear episode about british roadsters? It's not about 0-60, it's about simplicity and revs and fun. There is a market for a cheap, light, small car that has excellent brakes and handling, i.e. what the NA Miata used to be. My only concern would be FF which might be required for cost and weight. I will hope for FR.
If they can really deliver that weight and MPG in a sports car, it is a new game-changer for the US market. Go Mazda....

1990 weighed about: 2200lbs, 116hp
1999 weight: ~2300lbs, 140hp That would be 24 ponies for 100lbs
2001 weight: ~2387lb, 142hp. That would fit with your weight gain vs power plan. The actual performance of the car seemed unchanged.
2005 Turbo Miata: 2,529lbs (Edmunds test) and 178hp. So there is your 329lbs but for a gain of 62hp, not 5 or 10.
Now let's look at the third gen car...
2500lbs and 168hp. Again that's 52hp for 300lbs over 16 years. The newest car is a good bit faster than the 1990 car. Not 200lb each time power was bumped but 300lb over the life of THREE models. Power has gone up 52, not 5-10hp over that same time period.
Your complaining about what?

It's important to note that the 50mpg target will be hit with a diesel (as the article says). This makes sense, and sounds very doable.
