Used Mini prices have really come down recently though. There seems to be a bit of a glut in the market for them. I picked up my used 07 Cooper S for about what a new Fit would cost in July 2010. It's a 36k mi, one-owner car, still under warranty. Mine is a lightweight model with Sport+ suspension, LSD, blacked-out interior, multi-function steering wheel, and heated seats.

I own a 2010 Mini Cooper S Clubman with the JCW package, a 2003 Honda S2000 and my wife drives a 2009 Mini Cooper S Convertible. We strapped our 3 kids in the Minis and drove 6000 miles on the "Mini Takes the States" Cross country rally from Boston to Denver this summer.
The cars are a blast to drive! The fun comes second only to the S2000. The steering feel is great and the handling is quick. The torque from turbo power makes the engine feel more powerful at lower rpms than the S2000's F20C. If you're a driving enthusiast I would recommend a test drive.
My mileage varies between 25 to 30 mpg. The clubman is the extended wheelbase version. 2 people can sit in the back with medium legroom and good headroom. With the rear seats folded down, I was able to carry 10 computers in boxes from the computer store. I have also been able to fit a large screen TV (in a box) in the cargo area as well.
To me, the car is an S2000 with cargo / rear seat practicality, good gas mileage and good wet weather / snow handling. It is not as sexy looking as the s2000, but the practicality and the driving fun more than make up for it.
I like that the interior is nicer in quality than a typical econobox.

I see you already bought something, but this might help someone else. When I was looking for a daily driver last year, I was pretty much set on the Fit. With Pontiac going away however, I found I was able to buy a brand new Vibe, which is essentially just a Toyota Matrix, for 10k brand new. It is boring to drive however and even with the C6, I still miss the S sometimes.
If you are gong to only have one car and you are coming from the S, it needs to be fun to drive, or you are going to regret it. There is no sense spending good money on something you are going to come to loathe, regardless of how practical it is and how much sense it makes. I have never driven a Mini, although I want to. They seem fun. I have driven a Civic Si sedan with a manual and it was actually pretty cool. Kind of like a grown up S. The RX-8 really has the "four door S" feeling down though in my opinion, it is too bad the mileage is not there.

I never got your message!I ended up buying a car from CarMax for a fairly decent price. I'll reveal what it is tomorrow when I get it. They are going to ship it to the local CarMax dealer in Riverside from a different CarMax.
I'm sure some of you will not like the car I picked but I actually like it. Plus, it's a 5-speed manual so I'll be able to enjoy it (slightly).
I'm going to miss the S2K, but I think this was all for the better.
