Default need some opinion

I finally found a job, which is great news, but the amount of travel I have to do makes is such that it would be impractical for me to continue to keep my S. I am really bummed about selling it but I really don't see another way cause I don't want to drop 4-5 grand on a beater and get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Anyways, any suggestions for practical replacements. I think $20k is my maximum to spend--but I would prefer 16-17k. I have looked at new and used. Originally I wanted a used TSX, but most that I have found under 20k have pretty high mileage. Plus I've had a difficult time finding a manual transmission.

Other thoughts are the mazda3 or a civic (new).

Any other suggestions? I think the bluebook on my S is roughly $14.5k

I would get a Mazdaspeed 3 (stretch the extra couple grand) or a Civic Si. They will both be reliable, fuel efficient, and fun for your long drives.

Mazdaspeed 3 gets worse fuel mileage than an S2K and the ride is more harsher than my old AP1.

I loved my 03 Accord it was just the EX 4cyl 5spd but it was a blast to drive and I got 38 mpg if i did 65 on the highway and 34 if i did 80. You could pick up a 06 or possibly even an 07 now that the new bodystyle came out for around 20k. I think an EX 4 cyl is 22 and change if I remember right. I'm sure they would let it out the door for 20. I know an Accord wasn't an option but it is like a TSX in a way... Here is a few pics of my old lady.

I agree. I was looking at the Mazdaspeed 3 too but the mileage is terrible. The Civic Si's mileage is nothing to write home about either.

I have considered an accord, however I'm not sure I want a vehicle that big right now. Not saying its large, but I prefer something a little smaller. But how is the power on the 4 cylinder?

I would like an Si because I really like they way they look, but not sure I can justify the price for one plus I was kind of hoping to avoid premium fuel.

I really would be sold on a car if it was in my price range and had the hid headlights. I honestly don't know what I will do with out them.

look at some of the is300's I think they can be had under 20's and have hid's and can be fun to drive and be dead reliable.

MINI Cooper S...very decent gas milage (29/36 for the new turbo, 25/32 for the old SC)...very fun to drive...decent room inside (just not much of a trunk).

Definitely you can get an 05 SC car for under $17k...and might be able to find an 06 turbo for $21-23k.
